About Scotland Street School Museum
Scotland Street School was designed by the renowned Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and is now a schools museum that is a must-see for Mackintosh fans.
Scotland Street School Museum is closed for a major refurbishment.
This exciting project will see the building, originally designed as a school by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, take on a new, wider purpose, including the creation of an early years nursery and a digital learning hub, in addition to the museum service.
The refurbishment is part of Glasgow City Council’s ambitious expansion plans to offer the national commitment of 1140 hours of fully funded early learning and childcare to all 3- and 4-year olds – and eligible 2-year olds – in the city.
Almost £45million has been awarded by the Scottish Government to fund these projects across the city.
Chair of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor David McDonald, said: “I’m delighted we are moving forward with plans to bring children back into Scotland Street School. The opportunity to play and learn again in one of the most famous schools in the city is one that I am sure will excite families in the local community.
“Our planned improvements will give nursery access to the rear boys’ playground and provide the children with an opportunity to learn within a living heritage site. This will create a multi-purpose setting, which will provide nursery facilities alongside a highly valued and evolving museum service.
“Opportunities to provide the public with a fuller understanding of this architectural masterpiece will also be explored. This, together with the earlier funding secured to carry out essential building repairs and protection, will safeguard the long-term future of this significant, historic building and ensure it is used by the local community and all citizens for generations to come.”
The full plans have been published in a joint Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life report, which you can download from the Council website here.
A reopening date has still to be confirmed.
