Every year Glasgow Life offers a range of Modern Apprenticeships to those living or studying in the Glasgow area.
Modern apprenticeships let you work, learn and earn at the same time. This means that you can build valuable work experience from day one and gain an accredited qualification which is recognised by industry and develop skills and expertise for future jobs.
Here, Dylan McKinnon talks about his experience as a Modern Apprentice and how this has led to a successful career in Glasgow Life:
“I decided to become a Modern Apprentice as I saw this as an excellent way of gaining experience while working. I was always aware of Glasgow Life through playing football at different Sport Venues throughout the city and was keen on working within the public sector. Glasgow Life seemed like an excellent organisation to work for.
During my Modern Apprenticeship I was pleased to pass my SVQ within the first year. This gave me enough confidence to apply for permanent employment within Glasgow Life. The skills and experience I gained as a Modern Apprentice led to me being successful in my application for a post within Glasgow 2018 European Championships. This was my first time working in a major event project team and I learned a lot about working within a major events team. With the knowledge I gained at 2018, I then moved to the Glasgow Life Events team within the UEFA EURO 2020 Host City Project team. This was a great opportunity for me to work in an area which I am passionate about. Glasgow has been successful in being one of the twelve cities to host the EURO 2020 Championships matches and I am part of a project team which is responsible for planning, managing and delivering the world’s third biggest sporting event.
I had a great guidance and support from my work colleagues and my manager. My manager and colleagues were brilliant with me and helped me get used to the different systems we had to use. From the start of my Modern Apprenticeship my manager gave me clear instructions and made sure I received all the training I required. My communication skills improved significantly during my time as an Modern Apprentice.
I hope that my career will continue within the Glasgow Life Events Team, working on various major events within the city.”
