Bach, Berg & Brahms

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Bach arr. Webern - Ricercare from ‘The Musical Offering’

Berg - Violin Concerto

Brahms - Symphony No.4

Antje Weithaas violin

Anja Bihlmaier conductor

The story starts with JS Bach, and the evening when King Frederick the Great of Prussia set him an impossible musical puzzle. The timeless beauty of Bach’s solution echoes down the centuries, a challenge and an inspiration to generations of composers. Johannes Brahms needed a rock that could stand against the storms and stresses of his tragic final symphony – and he found it in Bach. And when Alban Berg faced personal tragedy, he poured out all his emotion in a violin concerto dedicated “to the memory of an angel”, but haunted by the consoling strength of Bach. Antje Weithaas – a real poet of the violin – plays it here, while conductor Anja Bihlmaier weaves three very personal stories into one magnificent concert.
