First published in 1951, The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers is a novella centred around the lives and entanglements of three oddballs – Miss Amelia, Cousin Lymon and Marvin Macy, set in a small town in the Southern United States and played out for much of the book in Miss Amelia’s café – a place of cheer as much as concealment.

For Flo Brooks, McCullers tenderly evokes the frailty of and yearning for community and human connection, for something to do, for someone to care for, and the often twisted, wild realities of those desires.

In this online reading group, Brooks and the participants will read aloud together. Selected sections of the text have been chosen and will be emailed out in advance. Everyone is invited to read but there is no obligation if you would prefer to listen. There will be time after reading to share reflections and thoughts.
