Song and poetry in five languages; instruments from the mediaeval to the electronic – these are among the ingredients comprising Oran Bagraidh, commissioned by Scotland’s long-running Knockengorroch festival. Named for the only surviving example of Galloway Gaelic - the ‘Song of Defiance’ - a week’s residency brought together Scottish, Irish and Welsh singers Josie Duncan, Lorcan Mac Mathuna, Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde and Gwyneth Glyn, with Belfast fiddler Conor Caldwell, ancient instrument specialist Barnaby Brown, musician, writer and performance artist MacGillivray, poet Rody Gorman and Welsh duo Bragod. The resulting work explores commonalities and differences between languages, histories and musical cultures, bridging tradition and experimentation.
