The Glasgow Series

Opening Night: Rachmaninov - Symphony No. 2

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Milhaud - La création du monde

Shostakovich - Cello Concerto No.1

Rachmaninov - Symphony No.2

Pablo Ferrández cello

Alpesh Chauhan conductor

When the jazz age came to France, Darius Milhaud was spellbound. La création du monde was his response, and this fabulously colourful evocation of the birth of a new world is the perfect way to launch our new season – as well as a joyous  Introduction to the music of Les Six, the young composers who lit up 1920s’ Paris. In his first concert as Associate Conductor, Alpesh Chauhan also welcomes the charismatic young Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández in Shostakovich’s punchy Soviet thriller of a First Cello Concerto (he’ll be playing the Second later in the season, too), before riding out into the vast Russian landscape of Rachmaninov’s hugely popular Second Symphony. Russian music simply doesn’t get any more romantic than this.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

Alpesh Chauhan discusses tonight’s concert and musical life in general (free to ticket holders, subject to seating availability).

Concert ends at approx. 9.35pm

Concessions: £6.60 - Under 26s, Students, Unemployed / 50% discount for Registered Disabled.
