The Project

Glasgow Sport in-service are designed to improve the quality of football coaching within Glasgow, support candidates CPD and give an insight into a professional club’s Academy structure.

First time a workshop like this has been added to the Glasgow Sport Coach Education Calendar.

What was involved?

Glasgow Life’s Football Development Department organised and facilitated a Coach Education CPD night for coaches working at all levels of the game.

Partick Thistle’s Academy Head of Coaching, Scott Allison presented on the club’s youth set up and playing philosophy, before moving on to a practical demonstration on the pitch, adding layers through the session to the ages and stages of development, improving players' technical and tactical knowledge as well as showing game based practices

The Football Development Department wanted to provide coaches with an opportunity to come and learn in a positive environment with like minded people and in excellent facilities.

The free of charge evening was attended by over 100 coaches.

How did people get involved?

Emailing to existing club contacts across the city was the main driver in generating interest.

The use of Glasgow Life’s Football Development Twitter account was also a tool in getting the word out to clubs and coaches. The Glasgow Life website was also a key factor in promoting the evening.

We also sought accreditation through the Scottish FA’s CPD scheme which allowed candidates to receive 1.5 hours toward their CPD total.

Football Development Officers worked closely with clubs in the areas to ensure coaches living and volunteering in the city were given first opportunity to secure places on the courses.

Partnership working with the Club, Coach and Volunteering team also ensured that word and information was spread about the weekend.

Other applications were submitted to the Football Development team to be collated.

What participants said about the event

"Having the session plan to hand and then watching it in practice also helped to create a better understanding of what Scott was looking to achieve from the session."

"I enjoyed the evening and look forward to more events."

"I was a long way to drive from Dunbar, but certainly worth it. Really enjoyed it and it was great to see how Scott developed from the diamond passing drills through to playing 4,2,3.1."

"Last night was really informative with relation to the way Thistle have a structure in place for all age groups."

"Really enjoyed last night and thought the practical sessions were excellent."

"Last night’s session was great and I personally took a lot from it and will definitely use the coaching drills performed by Scott Allison and the Partick Thistle youth squad."

"Really enjoyed last night, lots of good tips."

"Thanks for hosting the event – for me it was very enjoyable. We are presently going through the McDonalds programme and one thing from Scotts presentation was to have an end to end philosophy for the academy – we’ve always been quite strong with the younger children but we don’t have anything in place for the youth side of the academy."

"My 2 coaches, Jim and Brian along with myself really enjoyed the session last night . Definitely got something out of last night and was impressed with the set up by yourselves and Partick Thistle. Thanks again and will lookout for future events."

"Thought your session was excellent. Best one so far I’ve been involved in over here in scotland! Good ideas. Good couple of drills and stuff. Well done. Thanks a lot. I’ve enjoyed it."

"Thank you very much for last night. I thought it was fantastic."

"Scott was very clear in articulating the philosophy of the Weir academy and the session was really well explained and demonstrated. I picked up some ideas for my own coaching and some excellent passing drills.  The way the session evolved from a basic exercise to game-related drills was really informative. I'd be really keen to attend future events."

"I am glad I came along to this as it gave a really good insight into building up layer's as player's get older and not necessarily expect too much off them before they're time age wise. Very well presented by Scott Allison and would definitely be interested in hearing of more in future."

"Thank you. Enjoyed the night."

"I thought the course was excellent including both the setup & presentation. It's was a fantastic opportunity to see how an SPFL club views on coaching & youth setup. I would like to thank you for this opportunity."
