Today (Monday 8 September) is International Literacy Day, and this year’s theme is Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.

At Glasgow Life, we believe literacy is about more than reading and writing — it’s about communication, confidence and connection.

That’s why our community-based adult learning programmes support people to build their reading, writing, numeracy and digital skills in a shared, supportive environment.

In today’s world, digital skills are an essential part of literacy, and we see every day how they make a real difference.

People across Glasgow are embracing our new Citizen Literacy resources, building confidence and developing skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.

As Leeanne, Angela and Duncan share in this short film, community-based adult learning can unlock new opportunities and transform lives. Over the past year, more than 1,500 people have taken part and many now feel more confident reading bus timetables, helping children with homework, or filling in online forms.

More than that, participation has sparked self-belief, led to new friendships, and improved wellbeing. Many learners have gone on to college, volunteering, or taken up employment.

Adult learning can be truly life-changing.
