New Riverside Museum display celebrates the life of Dr Gerry Hughes

A new display at Riverside Museum tells the extraordinary story of Dr Gerry Hughes, from struggling with literacy as a young boy to becoming the first Deaf sailor to solo circumnavigate the globe. A Quest and a Legacy explores his journey as a teacher and pioneering sailor, and the role of BSL, education, family support, resilience and self-belief in shaping his life.

Curated by Dr Hughes alongside members of the Deaf community in Glasgow, the display is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. It includes personal objects from Gerry's childhood, teaching career and sailing achievements, alongside film and interpretation exploring his experiences. The display is now open on the first floor of Riverside Museum, which is free to enter.
