Prevent awareness training – helping keep people safe

We all want people in our communities to feel safe, supported, and understood.

Some people face harm from others who try to draw them into extreme views or actions. This can happen in person or online. By noticing concerns early and acting with care, we can help reduce this risk.

What is Prevent?

Prevent is part of the UK’s counter-terrorism work. Its focus is early help, not punishment. Prevent aims to stop people from being drawn into terrorism by offering support at the right time.

Support can include mentoring, counselling, education, careers advice, or help to stay safe online. Referrals to Prevent are confidential. Anyone can raise a concern.

Why this matters to your role

In our work, we may meet people who feel isolated, distressed, or at risk. Knowing the signs of radicalisation helps us respond calmly and correctly. Your awareness can make a real difference to someone’s life.

Prevent is a partnership

Prevent works through local partners who understand their communities. These include the council, Police Scotland, health services, education, and charities like ours. No single organisation leads this work. We all play a part in keeping people safe.

Prevent awareness training

We encourage all colleagues to complete the Prevent awareness course.

The course helps you to:

  • Understand what Prevent is and why it matters.
  • See how it links to your role.
  • Recognise behaviours and feelings linked to risk.
  • Know what to do if you feel worried about someone.
  • Understand how to make a referral.

The training uses short videos and real examples. It shows how to act professionally and without discrimination.

You can access the course on GOLD using your usual login. You can complete it on any device with internet access.
