Spectacular city events emphasise the popularity of piping

Two highlights of Glasgow’s annual events calendar – the World Pipe Band Championships and Piping Live! - return next week to once again fill our city’s streets and green spaces with spectacular sights and sounds.
Hugely popular, the prestigious ‘Worlds’ always attracts visitors from near and far. Last year, 35,000 people attended the renowned championships. Scotland’s Inveraray & District Pipe Band were the big winners on the day, taking the title.
This year, the ultimate battle of the bands will take place at Glasgow Green on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 August. It will feature more than 7,000 pipers and drummers, representing 207 bands from 15 countries. Bands will be travelling from as far away as Australia, Oman and Zimbabwe.
The contest coincides with the international piping festival, Piping Live!. The festival runs from Monday 11 to Sunday 17 August, and celebrates both the traditional and contemporary music of the bagpipes. There is a wide range of events, entertainment and activities to enjoy.
