Windows 11 upgrade to roll out from Monday (15 September) - check your asset tag now
Starting on Monday (15 September), CGI will begin upgrading devices from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This will ensure our devices are up to date with the latest features and security measures.
If your device's asset tag ends with 0 or 1, your Windows 11 upgrade will start on Monday and you need to act now to prepare for this.Your asset tag can be found on the green 'Property of Glasgow City Council' sticker on your device. It is a six-digit code beginning with a letter located below the barcode - for example, L03971.
Rollout timeline:
CGI will upgrade devices by asset tag number over the next four weeks. The table below shows the dates devices will be ready to upgrade:
Date | Devices with... |
15/09/2025 | Asset tags with a last digit of 0 and 1. |
22/09/2025 | Asset tags with a last digit of 2 and 3. |
29/09/2025 | Asset tags with a last digit of 4, 5 and 6. |
06/10/2025 | Asset tags with a last digit of 7, 8 and 9. |
Please check your asset tag and record the week your Windows 11 upgrade will begin.
How to prepare for the upgrade:
To get yourself ready for the upgrade, you should complete the following actions:
- Delete unwanted items from your Downloads folder and move anything important to OneDrive or a shared drive.
- Fully empty your Recycle Bin.
- Clean up your Desktop and Outlook by removing items you don't need.
How to begin the upgrade:
Once your device is ready to upgrade, you will receive a notification on your laptop or PC. The upgrade will take 1-3 hours and you will not be able to use your device during this time, so please plan around meetings or deadlines.
Before you start your upgrade, make sure you:
- Save all your active work and close any open files.
- Check your calendar for any important meetings. You may not be able to use your device during the upgrade.
- Connect your device to a power supply.
Once you have completed your upgrade, please restart your device. It may take up to one week for your device to fully settle following the upgrade.
Can I delay the upgrade?
Once you receive the notification, you can immediately start the upgrade or delay it. If you delay the upgrade, you will have a two-week window to continue to 'snooze' the process. The upgrade will start at 12pm on the last day of the window, and you cannot stop it.

Colleagues who use the MRM application:
Please note that colleagues who use the MRM application are not included in this rollout. CGI has identified MRM users and removed their asset tags from the rollout.
If you use the MRM application, you will receive a separate communication when CGI is ready to upgrade your device to Windows 11.
