April 2026

Mindfulness

For our April 2026 calendar theme, we are focussing on mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the simple practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings—with curiosity and without judgment. It means fully living in the "here and now" rather than worrying about the past or future, helping to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing.

Key Aspects of Mindfulness:

  • Present Moment: Focusing on what is happening right now, not what might happen later.
  • Non-Judgmental: Observing thoughts and sensations without labelling them as "good" or "bad"
  • Awareness: Reconnecting with your body and noticing physical feelings, like breathing or tension.

  • Active Choice: Intentionally stepping off the "rollercoaster" of constant, automatic thoughts.

How to Practice:

  • Mindful Eating: Slowing down to smell, taste, and feel the texture of food.
  • Sensory Awareness: Taking one minute to notice5 things you see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste.
  • Focused Breathing: Paying attention to the sensation of breath entering and leaving your body.
  • Mindful Walking: Feeling your feet hit the ground, noticing the wind or surroundings, rather than walking on autopilot.
