The powerful connection between reading and wellbeing
Reading is more than a way to pass the time. It can brighten everyday life, broaden our horizons and support our wellbeing.
It helps us become more aware, informed and imaginative, deepening our understanding of other people, places and cultures.
The National Year of Reading 2026
The National Year of Reading 2026 is a Department for Education initiative, delivered in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust. As the biggest reading campaign in a generation, it aims to help more people discover, or rediscover, the joy of reading and make it part of everyday life.
This focus on everyday reading matters because there is a powerful connection between reading and wellbeing. Whether it helps us unwind, lifts our mood or offers a moment of calm, reading can have a positive impact on our lives in countless ways.
Different books can support us in different ways: making us laugh, bringing comfort, sparking reflection, or giving us hope and inspiration. A book can help us feel understood, introduce us to new perspectives or simply give us time to pause.
Reading does not always mean sitting down with a physical book or ebook. Audiobooks and podcasts can be a great way to enjoy stories, ideas and inspiration while on the go, easing the pressure to find extra time in a busy day.
Book groups can also provide a wonderful opportunity to discover new books and make new friends. Members read books chosen by the group and meet each month to discuss them over a cup of tea.
I listen to audiobooks while driving, doing housework, at the gym, and during other downtime, I've read all books in The Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman several times. These are my go to books to boost my mood. They combine wonderful characters with a murder mystery.

After pregnancy loss, I found comfort in books and audiobooks. Sharing that passion with colleagues led to friendships I never expected. During one of the hardest times in my life, books brought me comfort, but book club gave me a community. ❤️

I listen to audiobooks while walking my dog, which helps me switch off and recharge. I enjoy the benefits of being outdoors while getting lost in a good story. On holiday, I love slowing down with a paper book, bringing back memories of reading for hours before social media took over each day too.!!
