Museums and Collections commitments

Each year, we ask all colleagues to get involved in our Colleague Engagement Survey. We want to know what’s going well, what could be better, and how we can better support you at work. Your responses help shape how each service area moves forward.

With the next survey coming up in September 2025, we’re sharing a short series of conversations with our Senior Leaders. Each one is a chance to hear how they listened to your feedback and what they’ve done since last year’s survey.

Each service area has its own priorities, challenges and successes. These interviews highlight what’s changed, what’s still to come, and how your voice has made a difference.

We spoke to Jane Rowlands, Head of Museums and Collections to hear about the commitments the team has been introducing in 2025.

Hello Jane. What were the highlights from the 2024 colleague survey that your team has been recognising?

We are celebrating that 92% of Museums and Collections teams are proud of the difference they make to the lives of those in Glasgow. 96% also regularly look for ways to better serve our customers.

To celebrate the great work that our colleagues are doing, we have been sharing our success stories, as well as customer comments and compliments, more widely to give them greater visibility. In venues and across teams, we have been taking the time to stop, recognise and thank colleagues for a job well done.

What areas have you been working on in 2025?

40% of our colleagues told us that they don’t feel they have access to training and 44% told us that they don’t feel informed about what Glasgow Life is trying to achieve. While these are improvements on last year’s scoring, we have committed to improving this further by helping everyone to understand how they contribute to the overall objectives and success of Glasgow Life, regardless of their role. We have also made sure colleagues are aware of the opportunities for training by highlighting the monthly Learning and Development training schedule.

What did the colleague survey results lead you to start doing?

29% of colleagues believed that the survey results would be acted upon. We know we can improve this in local team meetings and briefings. So, we have been updating colleagues on the actions we are taking to show how the survey results are being taken seriously and acted upon. In discussions with colleagues, we also recognise that they would appreciate more support for their overall health and wellbeing at work. We have been working on this with support from a range of colleagues, including further specific input in the My Wellbeing information and a partnership with SAMH to hold mental health Friday brief sessions in museum venues.
