Anu Tali conductor

“Today I saw 16 swans. One of the greatest experiences of my life. God, what beauty!” That fleeting vision inspired Sibelius to compose the finale of his Fifth Symphony: the resounding conclusion to a symphony that begins with a sunrise horncall, and seems to breathe the fresh, invigorating air of the North. It’s very different from the revolutionary steel of Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, performed here by the unmissable Denis Kozhukhin. Anu Tali is the perfect conductor to unite these two worlds, and she shares contrasting masterworks from her native Estonia, too: the tranquillity of Arvo Pärt and the supercharged rhythms of Veljo Tormis.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

Dr Leah Broad, writer, researcher and BBC New Generation Thinker, introduces tonight’s programme.
