(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Gérard Pesson - Aggravations et final

Tailleferre - Marchand d’Oiseaux (Bird Seller)

Poulenc - La voix humaine (The Human Voice)

Anna Caterina Antonacci soprano

Ilan Volkov conductor

“Just a look could change everything…but with this telephone between us, what’s done is done…” Alone in her bedroom, a young woman makes a phone call. We don’t know who she’s calling, or why, but as the onesided conversation unfolds, we find ourselves living every tear, every memory and every bitter, desperate hope. Poulenc’s one-woman opera La voix humaine (based on Cocteau’s play) demands a singer of unparalleled sensitivity and dramatic skill, and here Anna Caterina Antonacci takes the call. First, though, Ilan Volkov rediscovers the witty, mock-Baroque stylings of Poulenc’s fellow Les Six member Germaine Tailleferre, and locks horns with a 21st century French genius: as Gérard Pesson ransacks French musical heritage to say something unmistakably – and provocatively – his own.

Pre-concert Talk: 6.45pm in the Recital Room

BBC New Generation Thinker Dr Sarah Jackson talks about the cultural significance of the telephone.

Concert ends at approx. 9.15pm
