Ethnoresidue is a new video work made for Tramway TV that weaves textual and visual threads around an existing conversation with Kaur’s maternal grandmother which formed part of her book, Be Like Teflon, published in 2019.

Grounding itself in Pollokshields, Glasgow - a place of family, the city's South Asian community, and  Tramway - Kaur expands on the complexities and intimacies of identity, belonging and reckoning with histories, and their entanglement in colonial structures that persist.

About the artist
Jasleen Kaur (b.1986, Glasgow, Scotland) is based in London. Her work is an ongoing exploration into the malleability of culture and the layering of social histories within the material and immaterial things that surround us. Her practice examines diasporic identity and hierarchies of history, both colonial and personal. She works with sculpture, video, sound and writing.

Recent and upcoming commissions include projects for the Wellcome Collection, UP Projects, Glasgow Women’s Library, Market Gallery, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Eastside Projects and Hollybush Gardens. Her work is part of the permanent collection of Touchstones Rochdale, Royal College of Art and Crafts Council.


Tramway TV is the online platform for our arts programme, featuring a combination of film, artist conversations, digital performances and online interventions from visual artists and performance makers across Scotland and beyond.
