Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique

(Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45pm)

Ravel orch. Yan Maresz - Violin Sonata in G major

Honegger - Pacific 231

Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique

Alena Baeva violin

Pascal Rophé conductor

Ravel, Honegger and Berlioz each created new musical worlds. Still, nothing in music quite compares to the sensational, opiumfuelled phantasmagoria that is Berlioz’s

Symphonie fantastique, and with Pascal Rophé to lead the revels, this should raise the roof. But France, after all, is a country with 246 different varieties of cheese, and if Berlioz’s symphonic spectacular is one side of the French character, Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata is another – sensuous and sophisticated, with a very Gallic sense of the blues. Yan Maresz’s orchestral version is an exquisite showcase

for the young Russian violinist Alena Baeva. And then it’s all aboard the Les Six special, as Honegger’s symphonic portrait of a steam locomotive whistles, hisses and thunders through the night.

Pre-concert: 6.45pm in the Recital Room
