2026 Summer Reading Challenge
What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
COMING SOON! The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge runs from Saturday 20 June to Sunday 9 August.
This year’s theme, Read to the Beat, celebrates the rhythm of stories—where reading meets music, imagination, and creativity.
And new for 2026, children can still read 6 books to complete the Challenge if they wish but there's also other exciting ways to take part with brand-new 'goals' to complete!
From joining library events, writing book reviews to listening to audiobooks or diving into comics, every goal helps keep the rhythm going all summer long.
We’ll also be hosting music and craft-themed events in libraries throughout the Challenge.
Who can take part in the Challenge?
The main Challenge is for children aged 4 -11 years old, when they sign up at the library they'll receive an activity pack to collect stickers and prizes as they work through completing the 6 books and/or goals. Once they complete the challenge they'll earn a certificate to celebrate!
For ages 0–3, there’s a mini Read to the Beat challenge designed to spark early love of stories through shared reading and playful discovery.
It’s the perfect way to keep children reading, inspired, and entertained during the holidays.
The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge is owned by The Reading Agency. Read to the Beat is brought in partnership with Universal Music Group.
