Glasgow Life appoints Martin Wright as Head of Sport and Physical Activity

Glasgow Life, the charity that leads culture, events, and active living in Glasgow, has today (Tuesday, 6 October) announced the appointment of Martin Wright as Head of Sport and Physical Activity.

Martin has been leading the service on an interim basis since July. Following an extensive and competitive recruitment process, he will now take on the role permanently.

Martin brings a wealth of knowledge and has provided strong leadership across our sport and physical activity teams in recent months. He has worked with Glasgow Life since our charity was created and has more than 20 years of experience across sport, leisure, libraries, community facilities and development, and marketing.

Having begun his career in events administration for the Great Scottish Run and Women’s 10k in the late 1990s, Martin then joined our sports marketing team where he was involved in the creation and launch of Glasgow Club membership before progressing through various community development and venue operation roles.

He spent over a decade in libraries and communities, leading a diverse portfolio of venues and services in the north-west and southside of the city, before returning to sport in 2024 as Commercial and Service Development Manager. In this role, Martin provided strategic leadership across membership, income growth, infrastructure, service planning, digital investment, and performance improvement.

Martin said: "I’m incredibly proud to have been appointed Head of Sport and Physical Activity. Having spent all my career with Glasgow Life, I know first-hand the commitment and expertise of our people and the positive difference our services and programmes make to communities across the city.

"I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the service as we deliver the city’s Sport and Physical Activity Strategy to 2035, and to working with colleagues and partners to improve Glasgow’s health and wellbeing, increase participation, and create more opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy the benefits of being active."

George Hunter, Glasgow Life’s Director of Libraries, Sport and Physical Activity, and Communities, said: “Martin is a passionate advocate for the transformational power sport and physical activity have to change lives. With more than 20 years’ experience of developing innovative, sustainable, and community-focussed services, and building successful, collaborative partnerships across the city and with national sporting bodies, he is the ideal person to lead our Sport and Physical Activity service and to ensure our charity continues to connect meaningfully with the people of Glasgow.”
