Young Person’s Free Bus Travel Scheme
From 31 January 2022, all 5-21 year olds living in Scotland will be eligible for free bus travel in any part of Scotland, using a National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Young Scot NEC). (Only a few services, such as premium-fare night buses and City Sightseeing buses will not accept the card – please contact the bus company before you travel if you are unsure).
Children and young people will need to apply for a new or replacement NEC or Young Scot NEC, even if they already have one. Parents or Guardians must provide approval for children aged 5-15 to access the scheme by applying on their behalf, whereas 16-21 year olds can apply themselves.
Applications are now open and in light of high levels of COVID-19 transmission, the Scottish Government is asking that you only apply for the scheme at this point if it is essential that you, or your child, travel while restrictions are in place. All other eligible applicants will be encouraged to apply at a later date.
Please note: All Glasgow school pupils will be given the opportunity to apply via their school in the coming weeks and if your child is under 16, they will receive an application form via their schools. S1 and S2 pupils will require a school visit to have their photograph taken. S3 pupils and above with an existing Young Scot Card will receive an application to complete for a replacement.
