A warm welcome at Shettleston Library

This week, the Adult Learning Team welcomed special guests to Shettleston Library. John Casey and Diane Gardner from Citizen Literacy, along with their colleague Professor Chizuko Nagaoka from Den-en Chofu University in Japan, visited to learn about how we support adult literacy and numeracy in the city.

Professor Nagaoka teaches Lifelong Learning and Adult Education. She shared details about her work running evening classes for adults who missed out on school.

Citizen Literacy is an independent non-profit that helps adults improve their English literacy skills.

Colleagues at Shettleston Library welcomed our guests and shared the library's and the local area's history.

Mary Rocks from the Adult Learning Team talked about the many ways we support literacy and numeracy through our libraries and community venues across the city.

We offer free classes for adults aged 16 and over to help with maths, spelling, reading, and writing. These classes also support things like:

  • Filling out forms
  • Helping children with homework
  • Understanding bills and bank statements
  • And much more
