Celebrating journeys at Refugee Festival Scotland

This year’s Refugee Festival Scotland ran from 13 to 22 June, with the theme Milestones. The Adult Learning Team was proud to take part. They hosted a Creative Workshop at the Mitchell Library, bringing people together to share their stories.

The event celebrated the journeys of learners from our Creative ESOL programme. As well as others from across Glasgow Life and our partner organisations. Named Our Journeys, Our Voices, it was full of creativity, learning and connection.

Guests listened to new poems and short stories from Hong Kong written by Charlie, a participant in our creative writing group. There was also a fun and interactive Scottish quiz inspired by our ESOL Book Group’s Scottish Atlas Project. Learners Nejla and Volkan led this and brought everyone together with their energy and humour.

The event concluded with something truly special. The first Glasgow screening of a short animated film by Russian artist and director Ivan Pavlov. He shared the story behind his award-winning film, "My Babushka Smokes a Pipe," and discussed the art of animation.

On the day, artist Jem Milton created a beautiful visual record of the event. A unique memento that everyone could take away.

The learners said they had a brilliant time, and many have already shared their experiences with classmates. They’re looking forward to more chances to be creative and connect with others.

Participants said:

“It was meaningful. I learned about Glasgow’s history and culture. I saw how much effort is going into helping people grow in different ways.”

“It was great to see what’s happening and how people are helping each other.”

“We need more chances like this. Everyone should feel that their voice matters. Especially those who now call Scotland home.”
