Employment policy updates from April 2026
We have updated several employment policies to meet new UK laws. These changes give colleagues enhanced rights and protections from their first day.
What’s changed
Day one rights for family leave
Statutory Paternity and Unpaid Parental Leave are now available from day one of employment.
More flexibility for paternity leave
Paternity Leave can now be taken at any time within 52 weeks. The old restriction no longer applies.
Temporary notice change for some parents
A transitional period began on 18 February 2026. If your baby is due between 5 April and 25 July 2026, you only need to give 28 days’ notice under the new rule.
This new rule replaces the usual 15-week notice for these cases.
Sexual harassment is now included under whistleblowing law
If you report sexual harassment, you are now protected by law.
Anyone who raises these concerns is protected from unfair treatment or dismissal.
New bereaved partner’s paternity leave
This supports colleagues whose partner dies within the first year after birth or adoption.
Depending on the situation, you may be able to take up to 52 weeks of leave.
These changes took effect on Monday 6 April 2026, under the Employment Rights Act 2025 and the Paternity Bereavement Act 2024.
Where to find the updated policies

Looking ahead
We expect more changes to the law in October 2026, and we will review our policies when that happens.
