Glasgow 850 displays celebrate the city’s heritage and unique social history collections of The People’s Palace

As part of the Glasgow 850 programme commemorating the city’s landmark anniversary, two displays celebrating Glasgow’s rich social history are going on a citywide tour.

While the People’s Palace is closed to the public, during its major, multi-million pound renovation, the two travelling displays will shine a spotlight on the much-loved museum’s unique collections and heritage they embody.

Opening at the Burrell Collection on Friday 13 June until Thursday 26 June and then touring over 20 city venues before concluding at Parkhead Library on Sunday 21 December – is Capturing the Moment: Glasgow then and now.

Showcasing the work of acclaimed Glaswegian street photographer Eric Watt – whose images of the city from the 1950s to the 1990s reveal so much about the character of Glasgow and its people – the display has been developed in partnership with pupils from Shawlands Academy.

The pupils selected Watt’s photos shown in the display and wrote captions highlighting their impressions of how the images portray the city of the past. Their own photos of today’s Glasgow are also featured.

The second display, Our People’s Palace, opens at Bridgeton Library on Friday 20 June before visiting seven city venues until Friday 5 December. It has been curated by Friends of the Pipe Factory – a community arts, heritage and social partnership based in Glasgow’s East End.

Supported by Glasgow Life Museums colleagues, the group chose the themes, objects and images featured. Including a selection of fascinating artefacts from the People’s Palace, and highlighting their stories and historic relevance, the display aims to help connect local people with the heritage of their communities.
