Glasgow Life has signed up as a partner organisation for Relay Your Way, an epic relay across Britain. The relay champions the 1.5 million young people with disabilities in the UK. It sends the powerful message that sport, adventure and play should be inclusive to all.

To support the initiative, a team from Sport has signed up to run 6.4 km in Stage Five of the relay on Tuesday, 3 June.

Philip Peek, Sport & Physical Activity Officer, shared his motivation for getting involved: "I'm taking part to raise money for a great cause. In my role at GL, I see firsthand the difference charities like Cerebra make to the lives of children and their families. It's also a brilliant chance to bond with colleagues while being physically active together."

His teammate, Paul McLean, added: "Relay Your Way is a fantastic chance to fundraise for a great cause. It brings that warm, fuzzy feeling of doing something good. Plus, while I promote physical activity in my job, I don't always do enough myself. This event gives me a reason to get out running and spend fun time with colleagues."

For Stephanie MacLeod, it's also about celebrating the bigger picture. "I'm taking part in Relay Your Way to support a fantastic cause and celebrate the importance of inclusive sport. It's a great way to bring people together," she said.

What is Relay Your Way?

Relay Your Way is an epic relay across Britain. It champions the 1.5 million young people in the UK with disabilities, including half a million children living with brain conditions.

Created by the charity Cerebra, Relay Your Way will wiggle its way through the country. It will:

  • Visit schools
  • Work with sports clubs
  • Sports bodies
  • Local councils
  • And bring people together to celebrate the importance of inclusive sport.

The relay sends the powerful message that sport, adventure and play should be inclusive.

The event will launch in Glasgow on Tuesday 3 June. It will then travel 2,500 km through almost every major city in Britain. The relay finishes at the Parallel Windsor Festival of Inclusivity on Sunday 6 July.

Relay Your Way will comprise 250 stages and:

  • Features various ways of moving the baton. Including wheeling, cycling, frame running, tandem bikes, guided running and para surfing.
  • Showcases the life-changing and innovative technology and products Cerebra's Innovation Centre has developed.
  • Call at SEN/ASN and mainstream schools nationwide. Directly involving over 10,000 students in the relay.
  • Visit sporting, cultural and community venues, events and projects featuring young people with disabilities.

How can you get involved?

Cerebra is looking for as many people as possible to sign up to carry the baton on its journey. Whether that be a 2km walk, a 40km cycle, or anything in between.

"Even a couple of pounds donated can make a real difference to the 1.5 million UK children with disabilities," Paul encouraged. "And who knows—you might be inspired to move a bit more yourself!"

Stephanie added, "Your support means a lot, whether you can donate or just come along to cheer us on!"

Philip agreed: "Support us by donating to the team—or even better, join us for the 6.4km run!"

This is an excellent opportunity for GL colleagues to get involved. Either by signing up for a local relay stage at Relay Your Way Route or by sponsoring the Glasgow Life team here: Glasgow Life Team Page.
