Velocity Sustainable Programme

Taking part made me feel that I had a sense of purpose and that I was learning a new skill, which opened up a creative side to me. It gave me courage to try new talents... it is encouraging me to become involved in more projects. I feel I have a useful part to play in life going forward.
From August 2024 to May 2025, artist John Binnie led a nine-month creative programme as part of Velocity’s Artist in Communities Sustainable Programme, supported by Glasgow Life and Clyde Gateway. Working alongside artists Robin Mitchell and Màiri Morrison, Winter Tales explored themes of sustainability and the transition to net zero through community engagement and creative collaboration.
In 2024, the artist delivered Winter Tales, an eco-themed community play developed with residents, schools, and local groups. Through a series of drama, writing, music, and art workshops, participants reflected on climate change and explored how to celebrate winter and Christmas in simple, environmentally conscious ways.
Workshops with NHS Restart helped shape the script, while P6 pupils from Riverbank and St Anne’s Primaries, Cassiltoun Writers and Lodging House Mission 360 (LHM360) brought their stories and creativity to life on stage. Màiri Morrison introduced participants to Gaelic songs and folk tales, supported musically by Karen MacIver and Singing for Fun. Robin Mitchell collaborated with pupils and LHM360 participants to design and create props and set pieces using recycled materials.
The intergenerational cast featured schoolchildren, NHS Restart members, and Cassiltoun Writers. Winter Tales culminated in performances at Riverbank Primary and NHS Restart. Through shared performance and purpose, Winter Tales brought together diverse voices and generations.
