Open call: Visual Arts Commission - Oidhche nam Bàrd

Artist talks to primary school pupils

Deadline for applications - 23 May 2026, 5pm

A unique visual arts commission from Glasgow Life

Oidhche nam Bàrd / Night of the Poets: Poetry in Art and Sound - is a landmark national celebration of Gaelic poetry taking place in Tramway, Glasgow, on 10 September 2026. It will weave together the Gaelic voices of the past and the words of our greatest living poets, brought to life through live performance, music, and visual projection.

Artists are invited to submit proposals for digital visual art work to be presented as part of this live performance.
We are seeking artists who are interested in exploring the relationship between poetry, sound and image, Gaelic archive and contemporary practice, memory, and identity within their visual arts practice.

It is within the scope for the final digital work to be included in a future exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art.

Proposals should clearly outline how the work engages with at least one of the following:

  1.    A creative interpretation of a) archival material and b) contemporary responses relating to Gaelic art, poetry, language, or cultural identity, working within the appropriate rights or permissions for third party material.
  2.    Newly created digital visual work that responds to the themes of Gaelic poetry, sound, and live performance.

Submissions are welcomed from artists working with image and film, digital and projection-based work, animation, photography, or painting and drawing (adapted for projection).

Submissions can be from an individual or a collective.

The selected artist(s) will work in collaboration with a curatorial panel to develop visual content within a Gaelic context.  The work will form an integral part of the live event.
