Glasgow Life celebrates Black History Month

October is Black History Month throughout the UK, which was first celebrated in October 1987. We are delighted to host a vibrant programme of free events across the city.

Join us to learn, reflect and celebrate through tours, talks, discussions, film screenings and more. The programme explores Glasgow’s colonial past and its legacies, sharing the stories behind objects in our collections.

All events are free and everyone is welcome.

The City of Glasgow Slavery Trail

This new trail highlights the legacy of slavery and colonialism in the city.

This first phase takes in sites including the City Chambers, Merchant City, Trongate and the Gallery of Modern Art, revealing how wealth generated through slavery helped shape Glasgow’s growth and institutions.

Glasgow Life Museums education resources for teachers

As well as our public programme of free events, we have developed an online educational resource for schoolteachers to better illustrate the topic of transatlantic slavery to the next generation, through museum objects and archive materials.

We are delighted to be partnering again with the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) who work to eliminate racial discrimination and harassment and to promote racial justice across Scotland.
