Fernanda will share some of the practice and history of Brazilian company, Teat(r)o Oficina, one of the most important counter-colonial, radical theatre companies in the world, of which she is one of the directors.

Leda is the leading philosopher of performance in Brazil. In the late 70’s her hugely influential work theorised a specifically Brazilian practice of Black theatre—exploring the specificities of its aesthetic, theoretical, and poetic intersections—as well as its connection with African cultures, rituals, and philosophies. This thinking has yet to be translated into English, so this is a rare opportunity to engage with an important current in anti-colonial theatre and performance globally.

Writing Workshop: A Year on the Abyss of Genocide

Writer and poet Mahmoud Al-Shaer’s incredible books I Am Still Alive and A Year on the Abyss of Genocide are vital affirmation of everyday life in Gaza. For this workshop, he invites people to share in their compositional method: a daily practice in which he asks what it means to write under different temporal regimes—the present, during the genocide, and during the occupation.

As policing and state censorship increasingly uses the logic of ‘community safety’ and ‘hate crime’ discourses to stifle Palestine solidarity, how can we resist the institutional assimilation of ideas like free speech, anti-racism, and diversity? What practices can we develop which both resist surveillance and build knowledge of state power?

Freely Frayed: A Performance

Internationally renowned anti-colonial poets and translators Don Mee Choi will present a performance work based on her new book Freely Frayed. Her work folds family and collective history, photography, drawings, gesture and sound into strategies of resistance. Her work is a refusal to be legible that demands to be read, a translation of the unspeakable that must be heard.

Undefeated Dreams of Communism in the Indian Ocean

Decolonial Feminist thinker and activist Françoise Vergès is joined in conversation with Lara Sheehi. They will share 3 newly restored groundbreaking militant films and place them in the context of Françoise pivotal contributions to activist thought. Originally commissioned by her father—leader of the Réunion Communist Party in the 60’s, the films were banned for decades. They document the incredible resistance of the Réunionese people against French colonial power.
