In association with Glasgow
Jazz Festival, we are delighted to present Jazz at Festival 2018!
All the way from Turin are urban brass band Bandakadabra to kick off the night! Combining the energy of street bands with the musical precision of the great wind ensembles, Bandakadabra play everything from swing, rocksteady, Balkan, and reggae to drum & bass! In collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh.
Funky organ-driven movie soundtrack jazz. Led by guitarist Allan McKeown The Dt6 started as the house band for Glasgow’s infamous Starla records which produced exclusively 7inch vinyl to worldwide acclaim. highlights include working with luminaries such as Emeli Sande and featuring on BBC radio 3 live sessions. The sound of the band is a mix of funky chicken scratch guitar, soulful organ and Jazz horns. A nexus of James Brown, Ennio Morricone and Jimmy Smith.
Ali Affleck is equally at home with her beloved New Orleans trad jazz and Blues as well as with more contemporary flavors, and with such distinct vocal styling she inevitably draws comparisons to the most memorable of Jazz divas such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. With a three octave range, crystal diction and effortless vocal ability for swinging Jazz and Blues, Ali loves to share the stage and revels in the artistry of her band however it is Alison’s sensitive and passionate handling of the lyrics that really stands her out from other vocalists today…
To close the evening we have Glasgow’s own Fat-Suit. Assembled from folk musicians with finesse, house artists with grit, rockers with attitude and hard boppers with style. The influence of contemporary exponents of jazz, funk and fusion such as Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck and GoGoPenguin are obvious influences, but Fat-Suit are already opening up fresh lines of enquiry. The approach may appear looser and more relaxed, but the aim is to entertain as much as it is to dazzle with technical ability.
