‘Do not analyse my music,’ demanded the French composer Francis Poulenc. ‘Love it!’ And it’s hard not to love music as playful, as tuneful and as dapper as his delightful Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano. But then, French music has always had a certain je-ne-sais-quoi, and these three players are also playing two rarely heard sonatas by the man behind the Organ Symphony, Camille Saint-Saëns: music that simply oozes melody, romance and that indefinable Gallic chic.
