✍ Music, Scotland, History
Author Richard McLauchlan is our sure-footed guide to the fabled and fascinating history of the bagpipes, sharing stories from his new book The Bagpipes: A Cultural History, joining him is John Mulhearn from The National Piping Centre who will give us a tune or two and discuss his own book Let Piping Flourish. Discussion will be led by piping expert Fergus Muirhead.
Although commonly associated with Scotland, the pipes are played across the globe, illuminating societies in remarkable and unexpected ways. In The Bagpipes, Richard charts the rise of women pipers, investigates class, privilege, and capitalism in the piping world, and explores how a 'national instrument' can shift in meaning amidst the currents of identity.
“Historically insightful and full of character. Richard has captured the essence and beauty of piping's vibrant culture with historical, musical and characterful insight.” – Finlay MacDonald, world-renowned piper and composer
