The Glasgow School of Art Summer Concert

Night and day. Sunrise, sunset.
Throughout history the closing of the day, arrival of night, and transition back to day again has been the inspiration for countless works of art, passages of literature, and pieces of music. Artists have been fascinated by the transition from light to darkness as a metaphor for the cycle of human emotions and the various different aspects of our psyche.

The acts of sleeping and waking have also been portrayed as metaphors for birth, death and rebirth - exploring the transience of human existence, the possibility of an afterlife and also, perhaps most powerfully, as a reminder of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

The GSA Choir performs works composed over the last 150 years which ruminate on these themes, featuring works by composers such as Brahms, Saint-Saëns, Tavener, Vaughan-Willams and MacMillan.
