Following the identification of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within the roof Cardonald Library in late 2023, Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council have been working with specialist consultants to plan works to Cardonald Library.
Funding of £1.9 million has been approved to deliver a full roof replacement project, helping to ensure the library will be safe, sustainable and fit for the future.
Project Progress and next steps
A planning application was submitted on 13 July 2026 and subject to planning approval and completion of procurement, construction is expected to commence later in 2026.
The project will include:
• Complete removal of the existing RAAC roof panels
• Installation of a new roof
• Reinstatement of mechanical, electrical, fire, security and IT systems
• Redecoration of internal areas affected by the works
• Delivery of a new Changing Places facility to improve accessibility
• New internal & external signage and branding.
A detailed construction programme and timeline will be confirmed once a contractor is appointed.
While Cardonald Library remains closed, customers can continue to access services at Ibrox Library, Pollok Library and Pollokshaws Library
