Since reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was found in the roof of Cardonald Library in late 2023, Glasgow Life has been developing proposals for repairs to take place.
Preparatory works are now under way to allow full replacement of the RAAC roof at Cardonald Library. A detailed assessment by specialist engineers, Mott MacDonald, identified that 91% of the building’s roof panels were high‑risk and require urgent or near‑term intervention. Following professional guidance, the long‑term solution is the complete removal of the RAAC roof and installation of a new built‑up metal roof system.
Funding of £1.9 million is aligned to the project from Glasgow City Council’s Community Asset Fund.
Survey and design work is currently progressing. Structural and asbestos surveys are being completed, with detailed design and statutory approvals programmed through to July 2026. Tendering for the works is expected to take place between June and August 2026, with contract award scheduled for September 2026. Construction is anticipated to begin immediately afterwards, subject to approval of the building warrant and tender outcomes.
The works will involve:
- Complete removal of existing RAAC roof panels
- Installation of new structural supports and a built‑up metal roof system
- Reinstatement of building systems including M&E, fire and intruder alarms, and IT infrastructure
- Internal finishes reinstatement
- Creation of a new Changing Places facility
- Temporary protection and scaffolding throughout the construction period
A detailed construction programme will be confirmed once a contractor is appointed.
During the temporary closure of Cardonald Library, visitors can access services at Ibrox, Pollok and Pollokshaws Libraries or through our online services.
