Glasgow Life Sport is set to deliver the STA Pool Lifeguard Qualification at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in August 2022, date will be confirmed in due course. 

This course is aimed at people who would like to become a pool lifeguard. Learners must be able to swim competently and be able to surface dive down to the deepest part of the bottom of the pool floor. Learners are required to undertake CPR and First Aid techniques as well as pool rescue skills throughout the course.


On successful completion of the course, learners will be issued with a STA International Pool Lifeguard Certificate.


What will you need to do to get on the course and what is involved?

• Success full completion of a Pre-Swim Assessment and medical questionnaire which must be done in advance of a course.
• 16 years old at the time of the assessment
• swim 100 metres on their front and 100 metres on their back competently
• surface dive down to the deepest part of the pool floor
• Jump / dive into deep water.
• Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds.
• Tread water for 30 seconds.
• Climb out of pool unaided without ladder or steps and where the pool design permits.
• Ending in a practical & theoretical assessment where you will demonstrate all the skills and knowledge you have learned.

On successful completion of the course, learners will:

• Be able to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation for an adult sudden collapse casualty, drowning casualty, child and infant casualty
• Be able to administer first aid for a range of conditions / injures including choking, bleeding, burns, muscle and bone injuries as well as medical conditions
• Be able to perform in water rescue skills including retrieval of a submersible manikin from the deepest part of the pool and team lift
• Be able to perform first aid for an unconscious casualty including the recovery position and aftercare
• Be able to perform poolside rescue skills
• Be able to respond to and manage an emergency situation
• Understand the role of a pool lifeguard
• Understand how to supervise the aquatic environment
• Understand how to use equipment effectively

Course costs and tuition hours:

There is 37 hours of delivery combining classroom work and pool-based sessions. The pattern of these hours vary depending on the venue.

The STA Pool Lifeguard course costs £250, the fee includes 

  • A copy of the STA manual, The Lifeguard
  • Course materials
  • Award certificate
  • Administration fees
  • Tuition and assessment fees

This course is ITA eligible and applications should be made in advance and the course tutor advised at time of booking. Find out if you are eligible to apply for funding from Skills Development Scotland: www.myworldofwork.co.uk

Any candidates who are required to re-sit any of the sections can do so after 7 days of the initial assessment.  All re-sits must be complete within 60 days, failing to do so will result in a non-completion of the course and the candidate will be required to complete a full course with payment.

100% attendance required. Failure to attend any session will make you ineligible for final assessment. 7 days notice must be given to cancel this course. (No refund will be given in this instance).
