Art in Glasgow: short film screening

Join us for a pop-up cinema experience at 522 Sauchiehall Street and watch artist shorts and archival films.

Join us for a unique pop-up cinema experience at 522 Sauchiehall Street celebrating the neighbouring site to Stuck? Collective's sculpture park, formerly a cinema. In 1912, 520 Sauchiehall Street opened as the Vitagraph Cinema, later becoming the King's Cinema. In 1954, following its sale to Capital and Provincial News Theatres, it became known as Newscine.

Bringing together the past and present stories of the area surrounding the site, this special screening will show short archival films featuring Sauchiehall Street and its cultural landmarks, alongside contemporary artist films. The programme has been curated by Morvern Cunningham and Stuck? Collective.

Screenings will include:

Archival films (curated by Morvern Cunningham)

•  JOHN BYRNE – A short documentary about the life and work of artist John Byrne, by STV
• Glasgow School of Art, directed by Eddie McConnell – a short silent film of Glasgow School of Art and it’s students from 1957, overlaid with music from Tommy Perman and Andrew Wasylyk

Contemporary artist shorts (curated by Stuck Collective)

This screening is a part of the Sitting with the Stars, organised by the Sauchiehall Street: Culture and Heritage District in partnership with Stuck? Collective, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Heritage Places.

Sitting with the Stars is a programme of talks, screenings and activity which invites audiences to step into Glasgow’s social history as a ‘Cinema City’ during the early 20^th century - a time when the city had over 130 cinemas, and more cinema seats and picture houses per head than any other city in the world.
