Fifteen years after its New Voices première, Canadian cellist Christine Hanson’s The Cremation of Sam McGee returns to Celtic Connections, following a much-lauded Scottish tour in 2019. Upon its very first performance, on the festival’s final day in 2005, the Herald’s critic delivered surely the ultimate thumbs-up: “Even a worn-out reviewer could have sat through it happily all over again.” A multi-media reimagining of Robert Service’s celebrated poem, set amid the Yukon gold rush, the work features an eight-piece chamber-folk ensemble, spoken-word narration and evocative imagery by Canadian painter Ted Harrison.

“Her work is sublime. . . a great artist” (Michael Marra)
