Having thoroughly charmed fans old and new during the pandemic with The Orkney Series, an irrepressibly cheery video chronicle of life on their native islands, fiddle-led quartet Fara now look ahead to their hotly-anticipated third album, due in 2022, with tonight’s live preview. Further refining their gorgeously arrayed blend of sophisticated chamber-folk and full-throttle footstompers, interwoven with radiantly harmonised songs, the new record draws inspiration from Orkney’s pioneering role in renewable energy innovation, via material evoking both the landscape’s elemental forces and the human ingenuity that’s learned to harness them.
As of this gig, Newcastle-born Michael Biggins has another ten days’ reign as BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, but his 2021 victory, as the first pianist to win the coveted title, has certainly put him on the map. Here he unveils a brand-new set of material, highlighting his unique stylistic mix of classical, Northumbrian and Scottish influences, accompanied by guitarist Scott Turnbull and percussionist Callum Younger.
