Traditional music education continues to bear rich fruit not only in Scotland but also in Wales, as illustrated in this sparkling showcase of budding folk stars, a joint celebration between multi-award-winning Gaelic arts body Fèis Rois and Welsh folk development charity Trac Cymru. The Scottish contingent are young musicians who would have blazed Fèis Rois’s annual Ceilidh Trail over the past two summers, had a certain pesky virus not intervened – and as such represent the organisation’s senior crème de la crème, performing together for the first time since 2019.
Avanc is Wales’ national youth folk ensemble, established by Trac Cymru in 2017 for musicians aged 18-25, aiming to prepare them for a professional folk career by representing Wales on international stages. Under their forward-thinking artistic director Patrick Rimes –of leading-edge Welsh outfit Calan - their line-up of fiddles, harps, whistles, guitar, percussion, pipes, vocals and step-dance creates resplendent new ensemble arrangements of traditional and contemporary material.
