A jazz-schooled pianist who fell in love with bluegrass and took up the accordion, New York-based bandleader (and composer, and singer) Sam Reider has, even more than most contemporary roots artists, made his name by eluding pigeonholes. He and his band The Human Hands, selected from the cream of Big Apple string and horn players, were the toast of 2018’s Folk Alliance International in Kansas City, where they launched their debut album Too Hot To Sleep, fusing the melodic allure of folk with high-wire improvisation and high-octane ensemble verve. “Is it country, folk, classical or jazz? The only answer is yes” (Northern Sky)
