The Glasgow Phoenix Choir is delighted to be performing its annual Christmas concert in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The choir continues its strong run of performance of some of the world’s most beautiful choral music, a tradition now stretching to 75 years of choral excellence.
The Glasgow Phoenix Choir rose out of the ashes of the world-famous Glasgow Orpheus Choir and this year celebrates a total of 125 years of choral excellence. Our conductor, Cameron Murdoch joined us in 1987 as Accompanist and Depute Conductor and is an Honours graduate in music from the University of Glasgow who also studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He regularly plays harpsichord and piano with various musical ensembles, including the excellent Glasgow CREATE Choirs, and performs throughout the British Isles. Cameron is also Organist and Choir Master of St. John’s Renfield Church in Glasgow’s West End. Many of the pieces in the current Phoenix repertoire were arranged by Cameron.
The Glasgow Phoenix Choir performs many concerts every year, the majority of which raise money for charity and each involves a range of music from choral standards to new music and, in addition, we feature many delightful solo performances by choir members. Choir recordings receive regular play on local and national radio stations.
Matthew McIlree, our regular accompanist, will perform with us at this concert. Matthew graduated from the University of St. Andrews, where he completed both piano and organ scholarships alongside a degree in mathematics and computer science. He has been a multiple prize winner at both the Glasgow and Inverclyde music festivals, including twice winning the Glasgow Society of Organists' Trophy at the Glasgow open organ class; and three times winning the top piano award, as well the 2016 overall prize, in Inverclyde. He is now studying for his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Glasgow, alongside working freelance as a wedding musician and accompanist. Matthew can also be heard playing the organ as part of the daily recital programme at Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Whitburn Band – Conductor: Chris Shanks - is one of the most successful brass bands in the UK and has performed throughout the UK and Europe for many years. The band has performed at the Edinburgh International Festival and Celtic Connections in recent years, and Whitburn also play the anthems of the away teams at Scotland's international rugby games.
Glasgow CREATE Junior, Senior and Chamber Choirs - Conductor Claire O’Reilly; Accompanist, Cameron Murdoch. Choristers range in age from primary school to final year secondary school pupils and come from across all parts of the city of Glasgow. We are delighted that they will be joining us once again for this festive occasion in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Restoration fund

The stalls of the Main Hall and New Hall are equipped with induction loop systems, but operation is dependent on each individual event or performance, so provision can vary. Wheelchair access
Wheelchair access is from the Killermont Street entrance (North Entrance) only. From this entrance, there is Lift access to all levels.

Full table service is not available, food or drinks are ordered from the service counter. However, food and drinks can be brought to the table.
There is not a lowered section at the counter.
No tables are permanently fixed. No chairs are permanently fixed. Some chairs have armrests.
Drinking straws are available.
Menus are hand held and wall mounted. Menus are not available in Braille. Menus are not available in large print. Picture menus are not available. View our menu online but please note that some fillings may vary at different times of the year.

Free wifi
Yes, there is free public Wifi access. To connect, visitors have to register with the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Public Wifi which should pop up on their browser. After that visitors will only need their password for future uses.
