In Chernobyl, following the nuclear disaster, only a handful of people returned to their dangerously irradiated homes. On an uninhabited Scottish island, feral cattle live entirely wild. In Detroit, once America’s fourth-largest city, entire streets of houses are falling in on themselves, looters slipping through otherwise silent neighbourhoods.
Islands of Abandonment explores the extraordinary places where humans no longer live – or survive in tiny, precarious numbers – to give us a possible glimpse of what happens when mankind’s impact on nature is forced to stop. From Tanzanian mountains to the volcanic Caribbean, the forbidden areas of France to the mining regions of Scotland, Cal Flyn brings together some of the most desolate, eerie, ravaged and polluted areas in the world – and shows how, against all odds, they offer our best opportunities for environmental recovery.
The Arctic treeline is the frontline of climate
change, where the trees have been creeping towards the pole for fifty years
already. These vast swathes of forests, which encircle the north of the globe
in an almost unbroken green ring, comprise the world's second largest biome.
Scientists are only just beginning to understand
the astonishing significance of these northern forests for all life on Earth.
Six tree species - Scots pine, birch, larch, spruce, poplar and rowan - form
the central protagonists of Ben Rawlence's The
Treeline: The Last Forest and the Future of Life on Earth. In Scotland, northern Scandinavia, Siberia,
Alaska, Canada and Greenland, he discovers what these trees and the people who
live and work alongside them have to tell us about the past, present and future
of our planet.

Please note that there is on-street surrounding The Mitchell Library, from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday this is metered. As this is also a local residential area, please use these spaces considerately. Alternatively, there is an a NCP Car Park on India Street next to Charing Cross Train Station which is a 2 minute walk away.
