✍ Scotland, Photography, Urban History

Writer Alison Irvine, photographer and filmmaker Chris Leslie, and illustrator Mitch Miller combine their considerable talents in Concrete Dreams: The Rise and Fall of Cumbernauld Town Centre.

In 2022, Historic Environment Scotland conducted an extensive public consultation to determine if the building deserved a heritage listing. Instead, three-quarters of respondents wanted it demolished. However, a small but vocal group of residents, architects, and academics continue to stand in opposition, advocating for preservation rather than destruction.

Hear from the award-winning trio as they recall their 18-month research project, which culminated in this limited-edition art book. Given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Cumbernauld New Town’s iconic Town Centre, they spent time interviewing residents, past and present, collecting stories associated with the famous building, exploring various perspectives, and asking: Should the Town Centre be saved, or demolished?
