✍ Historical Fiction, Scottish Interest, Fantasy & Horror
Host Neil Mackay sits down with two authors to discuss their spooky stories, each set in Scotland during the 1800s.
In Mairi Kidd’s Poor Creatures, we’re dropped into Dundee, 1812. Isabel Baxter awaits the arrival of Mary Godwin, a girl of precocious intellect and grand passions, sent north to cure a mysterious ailment. Mary would become better known as Mary Shelley: the mind behind Frankenstein. Kidd’s gripping piece of historical fiction explores the story of emerging womanhood, literary intrigue, and the many monsters in the life of young Shelley.
Meanwhile, Elaine Thomson transports us to Caithness, 1871, in Hawthorn: A Scottish Ghost Story. A strange vision leads cartographer Robert Sutherland onto the moor, and an accident leaves him inches from death. He’s cared for at Leask House by Mrs Sinclair and her beautiful daughter, Isabel. As events take even more terrifying turns, he starts to wonder whether his presence at Leask House is really a coincidence at all.
