Musical Instrument Open Day at the Mitchell

An adult and a young person are trying out musical instruments in a library. The young person is holding up a flute

The Mitchell Library hosted around 25 budding young musicians last Saturday (2 May). All were encouraged to try out a new musical instrument as part of our Instrument Library service. Six instruments were loaned out on the day including violins, guitars, and even a cello.

Instrument Libraries are an initiative to get musical instruments into public libraries across Scotland. It means you can borrow an instrument for free, just like you would a book. In Glasgow, instruments are available to borrow from the Mitchell Library and Ibrox Library.

Some feedback from the families who visited included:

'All the people were very supportive and encouraging. Loved the knowledge they shared.'

'We are very grateful for this wonderful opportunity for children to borrow musical instruments for free from the library. It's an amazing initiative that inspires kids to explore music and discover new talents. Thank you for making this accessible to everyone!'

'Really impressed by this initiative. This will bring music home to every house in Glasgow. The instruments are in mint condition. Also, the support staff is incredibly helpful.'

In addition to supporting people with an interest in music, the project is also about sustainability. Making sure pre-loved instruments can have new life breathed (or strummed) into them.

If you have an instrument you'd like to donate, please let us know. They can be dropped off at the Mitchell Library and Ibrox Library
