General Services at the Mitchell Library

The Mitchell Library, Glasgow, on a sunny day. A large light sandstone building, with many windows and statues on the architecture of the building. Grass and trees are in front of the building.

Planning your visit to General Services

The General Services department is spread across Level 3 (Law Centre) and Level 4 in The Mitchell.

General Services are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9am-5pm and Tuesday and Thursday 9am-8pm.

Whilst most materials can be accessed immediately, for some periodicals and complex enquiries we recommend contacting us at least 48 hours before your visit. If in doubt, get in touch.

The library online catalogue is where you will find the items which have been added since 1976. However, the majority of items acquired by The Mitchell pre-1976 are only available in card catalogues, microfiche and other paper-based finding aids. Staff can help with your research or enquiry.

You can take low resolution still images of our items for private study using a hand-held camera, phone, tablet or laptop, in line with our policy on self-photography, subject to rights. Staff can advise during your session.

We can, if required, provide copies for you. This will not be possible on the day, and charges may apply.

If images are required for reproduction or high quality copies, please ask General Services staff or contact general.services@glasgowlife.org.uk for terms. Supply and reproduction charges may apply.
